Abstract: |
In response to a planning condition placed on the residential development an archaeological evaluation, consisting of trial trenching, was undertaken across the site. A desk-based assessment had indicated that there was a small possibility that the remains of a medieval leper colony might have been located within the bounds of the site while a magneotometer survey had recorded a number of possible archaeological features. Five evaluation trenches, 15m, 17.5m, 15.4m, 10.3m and 0.2m long by 1.6m wide, were excavated across the site, located in areas considered to offer the best chance of locating potential archaeological features. Each trench showed a natural profile of topsoil, sub-soil and chalk bedrock. Within all three deposits root and animal disturbance was noted. No archaeological material was observed. [Au(adp)] |
