Abstract: |
The cutting of three engineering test-pits was archaeologically monitored. A grave was found cutting the brickearth in the central pit, aligned with the skeleton's head to the east and probably lying on its left side. The upper fill of the grave contained several sherds of first to second century AD pottery and was sealed by post-medieval ploughsoil. In the southern pit the brickearth was sealed by a similar ploughsoil overlain by an organic deposit, probably manure and make-up deposits capped by a chalk floor, probably for a late post-medieval granary, buried under modern levelling deposits. In the northern pit a very thick deposit of ploughsoil, probably collecting down-slope or in a hollow overlay the brickearth. This was capped by a concrete floor and associated walls, probably dating to the Second World War. [Au(abr)] |
