Abstract: |
The significance of the King Street excavation lay in the fact that it provided the first archaeological evidence of medieval activity in the marsh after the diversion of the Frome in 1247. This reflected increased accessibility of the Marsh from the city and subsequent reclaimation of the Avon for waterfront development. The late 13th century phase of structural activity on the site was difficult to interpret. There was insufficient evidence to relate it to shipbuilding and industrial activity, and it may have therefore represented limited domestic occupation. The character of the site had changed by the 15th century with the laying of a rather crude surface. [Au(abr)] |
