Abstract: |
Three trial trenches and an open area investigation in the core of the historic town, between the junction of two Roman roads, revealed five pits, three post holes, one ditch, a pottery kiln with a surviving flue, and one feature of unknown function. These features dated from the Roman to modern periods. The pottery kiln was thought to represent a Roman industrial site on the edge of town, with medieval pits from the 12th-14th centuries representing roadside occupation associated with the market. Two pits were of modern date, and a further pit and three post holes were undated. [Au(adp)] |
