Abstract: |
The excavation of two adjoining trenches adjacent to the external face of the east wall of a late Saxon church was carried out in advance of the construction of a cottage on the site. Conjectural architectural evidence suggested the presence of the demolished chancel of the church within the area under investigation. The excavation encountered no evidence for a chancel but uncovered the presence of 86 intercutting inhumation burials of late Saxon to medieval date. Significant quantities of redeposited disarticulated human skeletal remains were recovered from constructional features related to the building of an 18th century cottage adjacent to the church wall. A substantial ditch close to the eastern limit of the excavation was interpreted as the eastern boundary to the cemetery. [Au(abr)] |
