Abstract: |
The site, which was proposed for redevelopment, was located in a Priority Archaeological Area as defined by the local authority. The archaeological potential of the study site for the Palaeolithic period was defined as low. The archaeological potential of the study site for the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods was defined as uncertain. Neolithic archaeological remains had been identified on an adjacent site to the north. However, the elevation of potentially Neolithic 'dry land' horizons on the study site was significantly lower than those to the north. Neolithic activity could possibly be represented within the peat sequence on the site. This assessment determined that the site had a very good archaeological potential for in situ remains of the Bronze Age. Such remains had been found on immediately adjacent sites to the north and on the available evidence would have probably extended into the study site. There remains appeared to fall within a datum envelope of -1.5m OD to +1.5m AOD. The archaeological potential of the study site for the Iron Age, Roman, Anglo Saxon/early medieval, later medieval and post-medieval periods could be defined as low, though evidence for late medieval/ post-medieval marsh reclamation may have been present. Past land use and development were considered unlikely to have had a significant and widespread impact upon the survival of any archaeological remains, though some very localised impacts had clearly occurred. The proposed development could, potentially, have a significant archaeological impact through the cutting of new footings and services, though this impact was restricted to the eastern half of the site. On the western half of the site it would be possible to preserve any archaeological remains present beneath the new playing pitches and landscaping. On the basis of the available information, the report recommended the early archaeological evaluation of the development site to establish the presence or absence of significant archaeological remains and to inform the foundation design process.
