Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of an extension to a church. Three trenches were excavated by hand to a depth of 1.10m, mainly through made-up ground which appeared to have resulted from landscaping, possibly in the late 19th century. A brick-lined burial vault and three grave cuts were identified, and the surface of a small coffin was exposed at the limit of excavation. No human remains were recovered from any of the grave cuts; this may have been attributable to their having been removed during landscaping, as the fill of the grave cuts comprised redeposited materials. It was concluded that the construction of the proposed extension in this location would be unlikely to have an archaeological impact. However, it was recommended that a watching brief shoud be carried out during all below-ground works. [AIP] |
