Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of the proposed residential redevelopment site. The site was shown to have a low archaeological potential for the prehistoric, Roman, Saxon and early medieval periods. Advice from English Heritage indicated that the site was located in a priority archaeological zone and that: 'a 13th century farm was situated in the south eastern angle formed by the junction of Sangley Road with the Bromley Road'. Sangley Farm (first recorded in the 14th century) was located to the south of the study site on the eastern side of Bromley Road opposite its junction with Canadian Avenue. Sangley Hall, a late medieval property, stood to the west of the study site just north-east of the junction of Bromley Road with Culverley Road. Although the study site partly extended into the grounds of this property as shown in 19th century maps, the study site was beyond the location of the Hall itself. On the basis of the available documentary and cartographic evidence the bulk of the study site appeared to have been located in agricultural land in the medieval and post-medieval periods until the late 19th century. The site was developed during the 20th century with a cinema and skating rink (subsequently converted into 'Furnitureland'), an electricity sub-station (subsequently demolished and replaced with a warehouse), a shoppers car park, and petrol station. Post depositional impacts on any archaeological deposits were characterised as severe and widespread. In particular modern made ground on the site was in sharp contact with the terrace gravels. Because of the site's generally low archaeological potential and the impact of previous development it was considered unlikely that the proposed development would have a significant archaeological impact. On the basis of the available information the report did not recommend the implementation of any further archaeological mitigation measures. [Au(adp)] |
