Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was conducted in advance of a proposed development. There were no historic or statutorily protected buildings in the vicinity of the proposed development area. Buildings of 19th and 20th century date were present within the area, but these had limited archaeological merit. There were no indications that the proposed development area was occupied during the prehistoric or Romano-British periods. The proposed development area lay outside the focus of the medieval village of Winlaton and was probably agricultural land until at least the 18th century. During the post-medieval period the area remained largely undeveloped, although some of the buildings were recorded on the western part of the site from the late 18th century. 19th century buildings were present on the site of these earlier buildings. There was no known archaeological resource in the proposed development area. Landscaping and construction works during the 20th century had substantially truncated a significant proportion of the site. There were no recommendations for further archaeological work in relation to this development. [Au(adp)] |
