Abstract:
The available archaeological, historical and cartographical evidence suggested that there were no settlements at Wandsworth until the Saxon period. There was no hard evidence to suggest where the settlement was located, but it may well have been around the High Street area. There was evidence for earlier prehistoric occupation, though there was no indication of any settlements. Many of the finds from this period were abraded, having been found in the foreshore area, presumably washed down the Wandle from sites further south. Wandsworth was something of a backwater through most of the Saxon and medieval periods, being away from the main highways between London and the surrounding towns. Even in the mid 18th century it was little more than one street town, again centred around the High Street just to the north of the site. The establishment of a Calico printing and bleaching industry in Wandsworth enabled it to expand rapidly, with the Wandle and mills playing an important part. The proposed site was undeveloped until the early part of the 19th century, with the eastern side, being fully developed in the post Second World War period. Based on this information it was recommended that an archaeological evaluation take place before development begins. [Au(abr)]
