Abstract: |
An archaeological appraisal was undertaken to try and determine the age of Ferrins Mill Weir in advance of consolidation work by the Environment Agency. On the basis of cartographic evidence, the present weir structure represented a re-building which took place sometime between 1857 and 1897. A site inspection revealed that the existing masonry structure was all of one phase, although parts of a box-shaped timber structure were identified against the upstream face, the significance of which was uncertain. There was cartographic evidence for an earlier weir on the present site but it was not possible to trace evidence for earlier than 1857. At this time a dam was shown upstream of the weir, apparently linked to it by a bank, and this bank still exists on the ground today. The dam held water which fed a leat leading to Gaunless Mill. The mill was known to have been in exisitence from sometime before 1827, on the basis of limited documentary evidence. No correlation between this site and the medieval mill, known to have existed at Bishop Auckland, could be made from the available documentary records. [Au(adp)] |
