Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a new house and garage within the grounds of Bramley Manor identified that Mesolithic flints and a Roman millstone had been found in the surrounding area. Documentary evidence indicated that Bramley Manor was a well developed estate by the Late Saxon period. Subdivision in 1649 had created three estates, one of which, West Bramley, included the site of the present house. This house, constructed in the late 17th century, was essentially a farmhouse with a number of associated buildings. The location proposed for the new house lay just beyond the limits of the pre-1888 barns. It was concluded that the potential for archaeological remains pre-dating the medieval period was minimal, and that remodelling of the area after 1888 would have caused some damage to buried remains. Archaeological evaluation was recommended. [AIP] |
