Abstract: |
An archaeological survey was undertaken of Golacar Aqueduct in advance of dismantling and rebuilding of the canal channel. Golcar Aqueduct was a Grade II Listed structure. The project work comprised a rectified photographic survey of the internal elevations of the aqueduct, which was Grade II Listed. A general oblique photographic survey, a descriptive record of the structure, and a desk-based study were also carried out. A watching brief was also maintained during the draining and removal of silts from the canal channel. The survey recorded details of the canal channel including a sluice gate at the northern end with an in-situ timber at the base, and one sluice board still in position above. The base of the channel was lined with timber and brick which appeared to post-date the original construction of c.1793-8. Areas of later repair were also recorded, including an area of brickwork on the south-eastern side of the channel which may have dated from the mid 19th century. [Au(abr)] |
