Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment across the site and its immediate vicinity was undertaken prior to proposed residential redevelopment of the site. The study established that the site lay within an area of moderate potential for remains from the late Saxon period onwards as its County designation as an area of archaeological significance indicated. The Anglo-Saxon Church of St Mary lay within Walkern, a medieval 'supposed moat' had been identified c.700m to the south of the site and aerial photographs to the west of the site had identified possible ridge and furrow agriculture. A listed post-medieval dovecote was recorded, while cartographic evidence indicated that there had been a complex of buildings in the south-eastern part of the site during this period. The report recommended that a programme of field evaluation be undertaken following determination of the planning application and subsequent demolition of the coach depot buildings. [Au(adp)] |
