Abstract: |
An evaluation was undertaken on land at the former Rowes Storage Depot, Chichester to determine whether remains of the burial ground and precinct of the hospital of St James and St Mary Magdalene were present at the site, and whether remains associated with the Iron Age oppidum existed. No evidence of the leper hospital or buildings within the precinct were revealed, although 14th century pottery was recovered. A ditch containing early 1st century pottery was recorded but too little was recovered to demonstrate that it was associated with the oppidum. Ditches and pits were dated to the Romano-British period, indicating occupation throughout the era, and flints attested to pre-Roman landuse. [Au(adp)] |
