Abstract:
The project was undertaken on behalf of the owner of the property, in advance of the proposed construction of an extension on the east side of the former Kingdom Hall, South Street, Leominster. The proposed works lie immediately to the east of the former Society of Friends meeting house, in an area used as a burial ground from c.1660 to 1904. The southern boundary of the site is believed to incorporate the line of the town ditch (HWCM 8904). The area of the former graveyard proved to be densely packed with grave cuts aligned east to west. Human charnel was recovered from both the surface stripping and a 1m deep foundation trench. Graves accounted for almost the entire area of the excavated trench, the natural was present in only a very small truncated block. A substantial feature towards the south of the site appeared to be much cut by graves, and was as a result indistinct; this feature is compatible with the suspected position of Leominster's town ditch. Subsidence cracks in the Kingdom Hall building and the boundary wall may also relate to this ditch, which elsewhere in Leominster is recorded as in excess of 4m wide and 1.3m deep (HWCM 21388). A large proportion of the artefactual material recovered from the evaluation was of 13th-15th century date; whilst this material was all residual, it did indicate that the graves were cut through medieval deposits.[AIP]
