Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that the proposal area had been the subject of outcropping for coals between the late 1940s and the 1970s, and that earlier mining activity had also taken place. At least one old shaft, thought to date from the 1890s, lay within the site, and the area was crossed by the embankment and cuttings of a dismantled 19th century colliery railway line. Slight traces of 19th or early 20th century ridge and furrow, a well-defined parish boundary consisting of a ditch and bank, and enclosure hedges also survived within the site. Coal pits within the proposal area had been referred to in the parish registers for 1600 and 1604. In the surrounding area, a Neolithic axe and a Roman coin hoard had been found. A Roman road, Ryknield Street, passed 500m to the west. Field inspection of the site revealed clear evidence of toxic waste tipping, soil movement and subsidence. It was recommended that a watching brief should be carried out during the demolition and stripping of any topsoils in the neighbourhood of the 19th century Yew Tree Farm. [AIP] |
