Abstract: |
<summary>A watching brief was organised at short notice following notification that British Gas proposed to re-lay a gas-main from Widemarsh Street to the roundabout at the Newmarket Street/Edgar Street junction. The area through which the gas-main ran was a Scheduled Ancient Monument - the City Wall and Ditch. Two trenches were excavated, one at each end of the new pipeline. At the Edgar Street roundabout end all of the trench fill consisted of recently deposited material resulting from the laying of the original gas-main, the insertion of other services seen in the south-east section, and the construction of the roundabout in 1968. At the other end, to the west of the junction of Wall Street and Newmarket Street, the trench fill consisted of material previously disturbed by the construction of the ring road and the laying of earlier services. No deposits of archaeological significance were observed during the course of the watching brief. {italon}AIP{italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} HWCM20078, 20080 |
