Abstract: |
During an archaeological watching brief, the remains of a medieval building were revealed during the removal of topsoil from the north part of the site, on the north side of a watercourse. The remains consisted of four pairs of chalk filled foundation pits, sections of sill walls, two central hearths and floor surfaces, an external yard surface and possible boundary ditch. Artefacts recovered from within the building suggest that it was occupied in the late 13th to mid 14th century. Monitoring of the site strip over the remainder of the site revealed the presence of some 19th century buildings. Extremely poor ground conditions made the identification of features in this area virtually impossible and no features, deposits or artefacts dating from pre-19th century deposits were identified.
