Abstract: |
Small-scale excavations were undertaken in connection with a proposal to renew a sewer. Three cuttings were opened along the line of a street, which had formed the axis of a deserted village. Each revealed the course of the existing sewer, within the only stretch where this had not been pinpointed during earlier fieldwork. The top of a stone culvert was revealed within one trench. A single test-pit was opened at each of two further locations, whilst a sixth excavation determined the depth of overburden covering the Derwent Valley Aqueduct. One of the test-pits was dug across a slight terrace, and yielded post-medieval finds and an early prehistoric flint blade. [AIP] |
