Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of a proposed development. A single Romano-British (AD 42-410) coin, probably representing casual loss, was the earliest evidence known of activity within assessment area. No evidence for Saxon (AD 410-1066) settlement had been found, although the place name and documentary evidence suggested a community in the vicinity during this period. The site also lay within the precinct of a medieval hospital founded in the late 12th century by Baron Haulton who also built the nearby castle. Prior to the foundation of the hospital, the area appeared to be open fields as evidenced by recorded ridge and furrow. The site was then maintained as open ground from the late 18th century.
