Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development, which was to include the conversion of the buildings of a former hospital, identified that small numbers of Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic artefacts had been found in the vicinity, and that numerous Bronze Age finds had been recorded. The foundations of a Roman building had been recorded in 1817, the precise location of which was no longer known, and a Roman coin had been found in the general vicinity. No Saxon or early medieval finds had been recorded nearby, although this was considered to reflect the low level of archaeological intervention in the area. The Earlswood area had been the location of a late medieval pottery industry. The proposal site had formed part of Earlswood Common for much of the post-medieval period; the hospital had been established in 1847. It was concluded that the site had a moderate to good potential for archaeological remains of the later prehistoric and Roman periods, but a low potential for all other periods of human activity. Any archaeological deposits which may have been present would have been severely damaged by modern development and landscaping, so that the proposed development was likely to have an impact only in an area of new residential units on the north-east of the site, and in areas proposed for access roads to the south. An archaeological evaluation was recommended. [AIP]
