Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the proposed site of an office development, which lay within a locally-designated Area of Archaeological Importance, was undertaken. Southampton had been occupied, at least intermittently, since the Mesolithic period; prehistoric, Roman and later remains had been recorded in the area. Significant medieval and post-medieval remains lay to the north. These related particularly to the Friary, the God's House complex, a medieval landing stage and the town's defensive walls and ditch. It was concluded that the site had potential for well-preserved archaeological and palaeoenvironmental evidence within alluvial and peat deposits at the water's edge, and could also contain evidence relating to medieval and later occupation and development of the waterfront. Part of the site, Area B, comprised reclaimed land, whilst Area A consisted of made ground. An archaeological evaluation within the latter was recommended. [AIP] |
