Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment and building recording was undertaken in advance of a proposed redevelopment. The site formed part of the Hetton Lyons colliery from the middle of the 19th century. Much of the area was open ground and was crossed by railway lines. There were two former colliery buildings on the site, the smaller of these was older and dated to the second quarter of the 19th century, it's function was not determined. The larger building was a brick engine shed dated to the 1920s or 1930s. Both buildings were in poor condition and of limited value as examples of their type. No further archaeological work was recommended. [Au(adp)] |
