Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a new public park with an associated commercial, leisure and retail development identified that it included the major part of the mouth of a former tidal creek, the Pool, which had been part of the ancient shore line and the site of Liverpool's first wet dock. The medieval town of Liverpool had developed beside the Pool, which had remained a prominent topographic feature until its final infilling in the first decade of the 18th century. Some prehistoric finds had been recorded to the south of Liverpool, and a thin scatter of Roman finds had been recovered in the area. The sites of a number of post-medieval buildings could be accurately located within the proposal area, although the condition of any surviving remains was not known. Further structures which could not be precisely located were also known to have existed in the area. It was concluded that the site had considerable potential for the survival of important archaeological and palaeo-environmental remains dating from the earlier periods of the history of Liverpool. It was noted that any such deposits would have a particularly high significance, due to the extensive destruction of the medieval and early post-medieval core of Liverpool which had been caused by 20th century redevelopment.
