Abstract:
An archaeological assessment was undertaken to examine the development of the street, and to describe the buildings that once stood on it. Akenside Hill was one of the medieval streets of Newcastle, and was previously known as Butcher Bank. There were houses on it at least from the early fourteenth century, and some timber framed and therefore perhaps medieval or sixteenth century houses survived on the north side until the twentieth century.
