Abstract:
The desk-based assessment considered the archaeological potential of the site, and the likely impact on this of the proposed redevelopment, the main component of which was the demolition of existing housing on the site and its replacement with housing of up to five-storeys in height. It was likely that these would be founded on ground beams bearing on structural piles. Probable archaeological deposits and features may include remains dating to all periods. Alluvial deposits were likely to have been of particular significance in respect of understanding the changing environment of the local area in the prehistoric period and 1st century AD, and its exploitation. A tavern dating to at least the early 18th century was illustrated on the site in early maps. The principle impact of the proposed works would involve ground disturbance during demolition and probing for obstructions, pilings, and the excavation of ground beams and service trenches. These operations may have varying effects dependant on the existing truncation of archaeological deposits, and their depth within the made ground and alluvial sequences. The report concluded that further investigation (field evaluation) may be necessary to determine the exact nature and depth of such deposits. [Au(abr)]
