Abstract:
The area was deemed of archaeological significance and potential for a variety of reasons. The area of land that was inside the medieval deer park survived largely intact and the present day land use (pasture, woodland and heathland) was a continuation of the land use that was being carried out in the medieval period, and probably as far back as the Iron Age. The area within the deer park pale was deemed to contain important archaeological deposits of medieval and pre-medieval date which may have been lost in adjacent areas. Some of the deposits have already been recorded. However, as the historic land use assisted the survival of early features, it was considered that the potential was high for the existence of previously unknown below-ground archaeological deposits within the study area.
