Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site and its immediate vicinity. Although no archaeological evidence had been previously recorded for the site itself, its location in the core of the medieval town and its proximity to the line of the Great North Road suggested that there was a good probability of archaeological material being present on the site. It was likely that the Great North Road origins date back to the prehistoric period. A number of prehistoric finds, including a Palaeolithic flint axe, had been found in the immediate vicinity. The existence of a weekly market since the late 13th century demonstrated a thriving settlement along the Great North Road during the medieval period. The site lay at the rear of the medieval burghage plots along the west side of the High Street. It was possible that evidence of destruction resulting from a fire in 1807 would be encountered.
