Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that numerous finds of Bronze Age material had been recorded in the vicinity, and that two Mesolithic artefacts and a number of Neolithic artefacts had also been found. Two possible Bronze Age barrows lay nearby, and a small number of Iron Age finds had been recorded. Few findspots of Roman, Saxon or early medieval date had been found. Sunbury itself had first been mentioned in a charter of AD 962. By the end of the medieval period, the proposal site would have lain at the western limits of the settlement, probably in an area of back garden or orchard plots bordering open agricultural land. It was concluded that the site had a low potential for remains dating from the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Roman, Saxon, medieval and post-medieval periods, and a moderate potential for remains of Neolithic date. Its potential for evidence of Bronze Age and Iron Age settlement or activity was considered to be moderate to good. It was concluded that, due to the site's modest archaeological potential and to the small scale of the proposed development, further archaeological work would not be advisable. [AIP] |
