Abstract: |
A survey of a parcel of land to the south-east of, and immediately above, Cheddar Gorge was undertaken in association with an application for entry into the Countryside Stewardship Scheme. Eight sites noted on the SMR lay within the application area: remains of Mesolithic, Neolithic and Iron Age activity from Totty Pot Cave; a post-medieval lime-kiln; remnants of a pre-enclosure field system; undated possible field boundaries and an enclosure; two stone-walled enclosures representing possible post-medieval gardens; a circular pond; and a number of shallow scoops of probable recent origin. Five other sites were identified: the site of a lime kiln shown on the 1888 Ordnance Survey map; a lyncheted field or cultivation terrace; a pond; shallow linear quarries associated with a post-parliamentary enclosure dry-stoned field boundary wall; and a series of former prehistoric field boundaries surviving as low stone banks.
