Abstract: |
An archaeological and building appraisal was undertaken prior to restoration work. The Arboretum, given to the town by Joseph Strutt, opened in 1840 was distinguished chiefly for its design, by J. C. Loudon, of connecting walkways separated by undulating turfed mounds, and for being the first part in Britain specifically designed for and owned by the public. The Arboretum was statutorily listed as Grade II on the English Heritage Historic Parks and Garden Register and two of the entrance lodges were listed as Grade II historic buildings. Therefore the Arboretum and some of its original buildings were deemed to be of national importance. A number of evaluation trenches were proposed, subject to planning permission. The targets for sampling would be the mounds, the paths, the Grove Street entrance area and possible boundary lines if the information was required. [Au(abr)] |
