Abstract: |
An archaeological desktop study was undertaken of 22 & 24 Saint Thomas Street and 5 Three Queens Lane. This part of the historic town was settled before the end of the earlier medieval period. The site included former medieval tenement plots fronting both Redcliffe and Saint Thomas Streets and also a stretch of the Law Ditch. However, the original frontages to both Main Street and also Three Queens Lane (formerly Hunden or Ivy Lane) had since been lost under the modern highways due to road widening. Until the mid to late 19th century the area was largely occupied by small-scale industrial concerns, with some shops on the main street. The yard of the Three Queens Inn lay within the present site as did, behind Saint Thomas Street, Plough Court, a crowded and probably unsanitary area of dwellings. Relatively little of the site was known to have been basemented, and the prospects for survival of the archaeology over much of the area appeared to be good. [Au(abr)] |
