Abstract: |
Work on this gas main trench commenced on 11 April 1994. The trench was within the southern part of the carriageway and was, on average, about 1m deep. Concern had been expressed about the buried remains of the 1,000 year old timber road that had been exposed and damaged several years previously when a trench had been dug for telephone cable ducting. It was also appreciated that the remains of the original St Nicholas' Church remained buried in the carriageway at the junction of Bridge Street and King Street. There was little of archaeological interest as the trench was heavily disturbed by recent service trenches and connections. Outside the shop 'Daisy Chains' (No 3 King Street), a brick surface, probably of 18th or early 19th century date, was encountered; it was about 4m square and 0.45m deep. At the junction with Bridge Street, the east-facing section of the\ntrench for the existing 12 inch gas main running down Bridge Street was exposed during the connection works. This section contained stratified deposits from a depth of about 1m. The section included a pit, about 1m wide, filled with dark-brown humic material, which was present at 0.9m below the road surfaces and continued, with concave sides, to a depth of 1.4m, where it cut into what appeared to be undisturbed natural gravel. There was no need for the section to be disturbed during the connecting works.[AIP] |
