Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in conjunction with site investigation works in advance of redevelopment. Seven test pits were observed. Whilst all the test pits revealed backfilled deposits associated with the cuts for the foundations of the walls of the present buildings, Test Pits 3 and 6 indicated earlier phases of activity. In Test Pit 3 the lowest layer of light grey mortar was below the present foundations and was likely to have represented either an earlier floor surface or make-up layer. In Test Pit 6 the brick drain was certainly of early 19th century or earlier date and clearly pre-dated the present building. Residual pottery and clay tobacco pipes from the 17th century were recovered from later deposits in Test Pits 6 and 7, indicating the presence of post-medieval activity in the immediate vicinity.
