Abstract: |
A recorded observation was carried out during the stripping of topsoil and excavation of foundation trenches for the new extension to the Ralph Sadlier School. The foundation trenches were found to cut into what appeared to be an assortment of gravelly layers which were different from those described in the literature. There was no evidence for man-made intrusions or even stray artefacts. The evidence from the site both in terms of the terrain and geology appeared to indicate the area had been truncated or terraced at least several metres below the previous ground surface. An examination of an OS map dated to 1881 showed what appeared to be an extraction pit. It was concluded that there was therefore no point in further work in the immediate vicinity of the school.
