Abstract:
The excavation of foundation trenches was archaeologically monitored revealed cellars, a well, cistern and culverts which may have predated the Methodist Chapel, perhaps relating to the malthouse formerly on the site. An undated stone-lined pit with a lime fill may have been utilised for mortar mixing, or some other industrial process. The earliest dated features on the eastern part of the site was a substantial ditch, presumably the north boundary of the Vicarage garden, established between the 16th and 18th centuries. It was likely that walls superseded it with an exterior ditch in the later 18th century. These were the boundaries clearly shown on the OS map of 1889. This boundary was probably in existence by the early 17th century, by which time the garden was thought to have been enlarged. [Au(adp)]
