Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken to determine the archaeological implications of development. The proposed development site lay in the northeastern part of the city of Leicester. Archaeological remains dating from the prehistoric to modern periods had been identified within a 1km assessment area surrounding the site. Consequently there was some potential that unidentified archaeological remains of any period may have existed at the site. However, no archaeological remains had previously been recorded within the boundaries of the proposed development site itself. Detailed cartographic sources for the proposed development site only dated back to the late 19th century, making the post-medieval history of the site difficult to determine. Farm buildings were known to have been present at the site since the 1880s and areas of disturbance associated with these would have existed, particularly in the south-east corner of the site. Post-medieval and modern quarrying was known to have occurred in the vicinity of the site. However, geotechnical investigations previously carried out at the site did not identify any areas of ground disturbance indicative of quarrying activity. A site visit was undertaken to assess ground conditions and the presence of any archaeological features. Standing buildings and dense vegetation prevented any observation of the ground conditions and no archaeological features or artefacts were noted. The condition of the site would prevent further evaluation by fieldwalking or geophysical survey. Trial trenching would be possible although trench locations may be affected by buildings and vegetation. [Au(abr)]
