Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation consisting of the excavation of two trial trenches was undertaken in respect to a planning application for residential development. The evaluation revealed a substantial northsouth orientated cut for what was thought to be a moat associated with Mapesbury House and a medieval manor house known to have existed on or near the development site. Stratigraphic evidence was found to support documentary sources, which stated that the moat was backfilled in the early 17th century and the manor house rebuilt twice. The demolished remains of late 17th and 18th century buildings were revealed as well as a buried soil of possible prehistoric date in trench 2. [Au(adp)]
