Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that two infilled ring ditches of unknown date and part of an infilled Roman enclosure ditch had been recorded there. The ring ditches were likely to have represented the remains of Bronze Age burial monuments; several similar sites lay in the vicinity, but no Bronze Age settlement sites had been found. Excavations carried out in advance of the construction of a bypass which formed the northern site boundary had revealed enclosure ditches and drainage ditches. These features were associated with a large rectilinear Romano-British enclosure complex centred to the east. It was anticipated that further features relating to the enclosure complex could be present within the proposal site. It was recommended that the southern part of the site, which was proposed for residential development and a school, should be subject to a minimal archaeological evaluation. However, the northern and north-eastern portions of the site were to be used for agriculture and as public open space. It was recommended that measures should be taken to ensure that these land-uses did not impact upon the enclosure or any other remains which may be present, so that no archaeological evaluation would be necessary.
