Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during the repair of a revetment wall at Egremont Castle. The wall formed a boundary to the castle, which had probably been founded in the late 11th or 12th century, and which was a SAM. The castle had survived as a fragmentary ruin, and it was considered possible that some of the fallen masonry from the structure had been used as a source of stone during the construction of the revetment walls. During the watching brief, no significant archaeological deposits or features were recorded in the area of the north-eastern section of wall, and no artefacts of medieval date were recovered. This part of the wall was thought to have dated form 1913. However, the southern section of wall pre-dated the first edition OS map of 1865. A total of five architectural fragments were recovered from this section, comprising two plinth stones, a section of an arched window head, part of a mullion cill and a block with a narrow hollow moulding on one edge. It was considered likely that all of these fragments had originally come from the castle. [AIP]
