Abstract: |
A desk-based study of the proposed site of a new settlement was undertaken. Archaeological remains recorded within the area of the site included Neolithic flints, pottery dating from the Bronze Age to the post-medieval period, two possible Roman roads and a Saxon brooch. A potentially medieval moated manor had also been recorded. A cropmark and a medieval artefact scatter may have indicated a settlement site, and areas of ridge and furrow had been noted. Four post-medieval Listed Buildings lay on the site, including three farmhouses and a public house, part of which dated from the 16th century. Two WWII pillboxes had also been recorded. Cropmarks at the site were thought to represent a variety of features dating from the Neolithic onwards, including field systems, enclosures, drainage works and roads. It was concluded that the proposed development area lay within a region which had been subject to sustained activity from at least the Neolithic period. [Au(adp)] |
