Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a plot of land which had been allocated by the Borough Council for business and commercial use identified that there was significant evidence of Roman activity in the surrounding area, mainly comprising coins, but that the exact location of some findspots and the total number of coins was unknown. Greenfield lay within a medieval setting, with nearby settlements such as Colne, Alkincoates and Barrowford having been documented by the 13th century. The proposed development site lay on land which appeared to have been used solely for agricultural practice. Examination of aerial photographs and a site visit had identified the remains of early field boundaries, in the form of ditches and banks, as well as ridge and furrow earthworks within the eastern part of the site. It was concluded that the site represented a well-preserved example of a post-medieval agricultural landscape, although it was noted that it contained no evidence for settlement activity of any period. It was considered unlikely that geophysical survey or excavation work would yield additional information concerning the nature of the surviving earthworks. The undertaking of a detailed site survey was therefore proposed. [Au(adp)]
