Abstract: |
Two boreholes, located on the western and eastern edges of the Yeading Brook on the alignment of the proposed new bridge, were drilled under the supervision of the geoarchaeological specialist. The study of these two boreholes confirmed the general sequence order determined by previous studies of the site. The key points to emerge from these two boreholes were: made ground existed to a depth of c.3.5m to 4.0m; sediments, that would be classified as alluvium, were present both east and west of the proposed river crossing; course fluvial gravels were present east of the river crossing; London Clay bedrock underlay the sequences and this surface appeared to dip from west to east; the upper surface of the London Clay, west of the proposed river crossing, possibly represented a buried landsurface. Only limited palaeoenvironmental potential was assigned to the deposits recovered from the boreholes (considerable evidence existed for possible contamination of the sediments by rooting and intrusion (possibly during road, bridge or viaduct construction)). No archaeological remains were recovered in the boreholes and only moderate archaeological potential was assigned to elements of these sediments. [Au(adp)] |
