Abstract: |
Stonework was exposed when ground was being cleared, a watching brief was undertaken. The stonework was a mass of sandstone rubble and large quartzite cobbles faced on the east and south with dressed sandstone blocks, it proved to be only one stone deep on the southern and eastern edges, and rested on undisturbed subsoil. Roof tiles of 19th century or later date were found in gaps between the stones, but no dating evidence was obtained for the construction or use of the stonework. The stonework probably belonged to a farm outbuilding, however it was unexpectedly substantial for post-medieval farm buildings in the area and could have belonged to earlier structures on the site.
