Abstract: |
Archaeological evidence, from previous excavations in Devizes, indicated that in places, 12th to 13th century defensive earthworks and medieval settlement deposits survived beneath the existing townscape. The projected course of the outer bailey defences crossed the southern part of the site. Deposits characteristic of the fill of the ditch for the outer bailey were recorded through borehole survey in 1997. The south-eastern part of the site retained the line of the original medieval burgage plot boundaries. The central and eastern parts of the site did not appear to have been developed as intensely.
