Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that very few prehistoric artefacts had been recorded within a 500m radius of the site, although numerous occupation sites of these periods had been recorded in the wider surrounding area. Finds in the vicinity had included Mesolithic and undated flints, and pottery of Late Bronze Age and Iron Age date. The projected alignment of a Roman and medieval road passed to the north-west, and a scatter of Roman pottery had been found to the north. No Saxon or medieval findspots had been recorded in the area. The site itself appeared to have lain within open fields until c. 1914. By 1934, a factory had been established on the site. It was concluded that any archaeological deposits which may once have existed were likely to have been severely compromised by the construction and demolition of the factory buildings. It was recommended that no archaeological fieldwork should be undertaken. [AIP] |
