Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out in advance of construction works at a site which lay immediately outside the defences of a Scheduled Iron Age hillfort. It was thought likely that the slopes around the fort, including the investigation site, had been utilised for agriculture in the Iron Age. During the evaluation, an undated linear feature was recorded. Subsequent excavation revealed that this ran east-west around the hillside, respecting the natural contour. A worked flint fragment was recovered from the feature; this had probably been redeposited during the natural erosive action of the hillslope. The feature was interpreted as a boundary ditch reflecting agricultural activity, perhaps contemporary with occupation of the hillfort. [AIP] |
