Abstract: |
The earthwork survey was carried out at the site of a house that had been demolished in the 1960s. A tentative interpretation of the landscape suggested a sequence of events beginning with a settlement of Romano-British date. A medieval manor house had been established within an undefended curtilage still partially defined by two earthwork features, and by the locations of an 18th century stable block and the south, west and north sides of a walled garden. The house may have been rebuilt or re-modelled in the early post-medieval period, and a dovecote had been constructed. A pond and a small platform, which may have served as a recreation area, had been created in the early/mid 19th century. [Au(adp)] |
