Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of a proposed residential development site identified that the site lay within an area of significant Neolithic and Bronze Age settlement, revealed by recent excavations. Roman settlement was widespread in the area, and Sherborne became an important ecclesiastical centre in the Saxon period. The site could potentially provide evidence to test the theory that Sherborne developed from a supposed Romano-British religious enclosure into a Saxon settlement. Further work could also help to clarify the history of the development of medieval Sherborne. It was noted that due to site conditions, geophysical survey and other methods of evaluation would only be appropriate in the eastern part of the site. [Au(adp)] |
